Life Update

24 Oct

Well, it’s been a while……

since the last time I posted here I was accepted to medical school, graduated university,  had a fantastic summer holiday with lots of amazing trips and finished the first block of medical school!

I’ve finally gotten used to the med student schedule which means that most of my time is spent studying and reading up on things for class & in my limited free time I either want to catch up on sleep or go work-out, be social with friends, or try something new. When I started this blog in January, I didn’t know how the rest of the year would play out and what I would end up doing.  While I’m so glad that I was accepted to med school, the amount of time that school & studying takes up is a little overwhelming & it’m still trying to find the right balance.  It was really hard after a year of finishing school as a part-time student & a fun summer break to go back to studying like a fiend (like the hardest part of undergrad X100).  I think the other part though is that now my school has unrolled a new curriculum that shortened the medical foundations course from 2 years to 18 months & my class is the first class on this new curriculum.  I think it’ll be good in the long term, especially when it comes to taking the Step1. Everything is integrated which cuts out a lot of redundancies and helps build understanding and application between all of the different subjects we are covering.  It’s still hard in the short term because for me some subjects are much more difficult than others (ugh, biochem) and it made it hard to plan out a schedule.  How can you stick to a regular routine when the schedule changes week-to-week & some subjects I needed to study a lot more than others?

Regardless, Block one is officially behind me! I’m done with Biochem, Gross Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology for the forseeable future.  One of the perks of our new curriculum and class structure is that if you pass the final exam for each block (finals are always scheduled on Mondays) you get a week’s holiday.  Those unfortunate enough to not pass, have to go to remediation all week & retake a final exam at the end of the week. Today, Oct 23, is the second day after the block 1 final & I don’t know what to do with myself and all this free time.  I woke up at 6:30 am yesterday and have been going stir crazy since then. Nothing to study, no deadline to meet or meeting to go to.  I tried to relax and catch up with the rest of the world by watching a couple movies  but I kept feeling like I had something else to do or that today was Sunday & that I had things to do for school tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be basking in the freedom after a couple of days though, then med foundations II will start all too soon.

In regards to this blog, with all the fun trips I was lucky to take this summer and then the whirlwind that has been my first block of school, this has gotten pretty neglected.  I would like to keep it up though as a fun distractor for me.  It’ll be partly about pretty beauty things but also a kind of journal for how this whole medical school thing treats me.  Ideally, I’d like to post once a week with a weekly favorites/fails and a weekly empties thing with sporadic posts on other beauty things as the mood strikes. The beauty blog/vlog world is way oversaturated so i’m not expecting that I’ll have any revolutionary insight or anything, I just enjoy it & like to talk about it.   I’d also like to add a weekly update of what I though of school that week. Some weeks will be glowing with details of amazing experiences and others will probably be a lot of sleep deprived self-indulgent whinging I’m sure.  I just want to be able to look back on the whole thing and see that those hard weeks were really worth it.

Break the Habit: Day #3

28 Apr

So far, the no-buy hasn’t been a challenge.  It’s only been three days, though, so it’s not as though I was expecting agony. However, I have encountered my first dilemma.

This weekend I’ve been doing a big spring clean-out of my closets. I live alone & have taken over all three closets in my apartment so this is a bigger task than it sounds. I realized that a trench coat that I bought, even though it was a great deal, isn’t as flattering as it looked in the dressing room & I’m going to return it to TJ Maxx.  That store is such a hit or miss place; sometimes they’ve got a lot of great items and other times nothing.  It’ll be Murphy’s Law in action when I go in on Tuesday & there will be lots of things that are my style.  That’s always the way it is with shopping.

I wanted to add in a picture of the two products I finished up today but I can’t find my camera charger.  Aaaaaahhh where did it go?!? I’ll try & find it & add those in for tomorrow.

Break the Habit: 21 Day No-buy Project

27 Apr

I need a break. From shopping.  For everything.  My P10P for makeup failed a couple months ago when I hit a wall after not finishing anything for weeks. Since then I’ve been finding so many new things to try that I’ve been buying in spades. Chic Week, coupons, and YT video suggestions & new product launches have added lots & lots of products to my makeup stash.

What spurred this was my last shopping trip to Walgreens. I had a Covergirl coupon for $3 off two Covergirl products and it was BOGO 50%.  I really wanted to try the gloss balms. I could get in & out for under $10.00.   Once I got into the store, I found so many products that I had been looking for.  They had the Revlon cream blush sticks, the new Colorburst glosses & lip butters all in stock.  Covergirl nail varnishes were 1.00 off plus there were 0.50 coupons plus balance points. I got away with only the 2 CG gloss balms, 2 CG nail varnishes and one of the Revlon Colorburst glosses.  Not bad, but twice many things as I went in there for. Yes, I’ll use them & probably would have got them eventually, but I didn’t need them right that moment.  The whole hour-long drive home I knew I had to change something. Enter the April 26-May 16 no-buy.

Choosing 21 days for my no-buy is not an arbitrary number; there are two reasons why this project will last less than a month. I remember reading somewhere that it takes 21 days to break a habit.  I’m not sure if that works for something that a person doesn’t do all the time…I shop a lot, but not every day. Either way, it will be a sizable break from my previous shopping patterns which can only be a good thing. The other reason is that I am going on holiday on May 18 and will do some shopping on holiday. Technically this project will end on May 16 -which is good because on May 17 I know I may have to get a couple of travel sized toiletries- but I hope I can actually make it to May 18 and find substitute items.

I used to go long expanses of time without shopping for anything: I could do two month no-buys on everything without batting an eye.  Other times, when I did feel like shopping it was for one category of things in particular which limited the amount of items purchased. For me, shopping is a stress reliever & helped me to take my mind off of all the pressure and overwhelming nerves I was feeling during the whole MCAT prep/applications/ interviews/waiting process that started last summer through to this spring.  My shopping slowly evolved from sporadic and categorically limited to more frequent and across all categories.  I love to try new things so with shopping+stress, everything became appealing.  Beauty, clothing, decor, activities, new foods, wines… you name it, I’ve most likely been trying it.

To be clear, I am not a hoarder! Reading over the last paragraphs I hope it doesn’t come across that way.  I also have never carried any debt or had to sacrifice other things for shopping. Even though I have been shopping more, I am still financially responsible.  Saving money will be a bonus, not the intent of the project.

So, for the next 21 days I am going to be going on a lifestyle purge.  There is no foreseeable reason that I should need to make any extraneous purchases.  Obviously there are going to be a couple of exceptions. I am, of course, allowed to buy food essentials. The only other exception that may arise is the need for a waterproof makeup remover. This is not an item that I stock up on and I currently only have less than half a bottle left.   I use waterproof mascara every day & it is necessary to use a waterproof makeup remover to get it all off.  Problem: I really like the Sephora bi-phase waterproof eye makeup remover- it’s the closest I’ve found to the Lancome Bi-facil at 1/3 the price- but I’ll have to go into a Sephora to get it.   I have watched a couple of tutorials on how to use olive oil as an eye makeup remover so I think I’ll be trying that out. I am also allowing myself one meal out; some friends and I are going to go out for a meal & drinks after our final exams.  Those three things are the only exception to the rule.

To keep myself on track, I will be posting here my thoughts & progress on each day. (This was meant to go up yesterday, so one day complete!) Some days will definitely be more challenging than others. Hopefully I’ll even be able to use up a few products during the course of this no-buy, trying new recipes to use up all of the things I found so interesting at the grocery store, and find new ways to style my clothing & apartment.  I’ll also be talking about some of the new product that I have purchased in the last couple of weeks (ugh, months even) that I’ll be getting around to trying for the first time.

Aaaah, so much text & no pictures. If anybody read this far, you’re a gem.  Day 2 complete.

Influenster Sweetheart Vox Box

7 Apr

I didn’t even know that I had been selected for this box until I found it in my mailbox! It was an awesome surprise to find after a microbiology exam.  Here’s what came in the Sweetheart VoxBox:

DSC00224

Olay Fresh Effects Va-Va-Vivid Powered Cleanser System: This was the stand-out product in the box for me.  The cleanser is a fantastic gentle creamy cleanser that really cuts through oiliness.  I like creamy cleansers but have combination skin so this is a perfect happy medium.  It gets rid of oil without being drying. I’ve been using this in the morning & find that it keeps oil at bay & I don’t have to touch up or blot until late in the afternoon. For my skin, that’s amazing.  I only use the powered cleansing brush a couple of days a week to clean my pores & feel that it is just…meh.  The brush just has a powerful vibration & I don’t feel like the rubber bristles on their own really do a deep cleaning.  I either like to use this with a scrub or to use this and then a Biore Pore Strip to really get out the impurities. I am super glad I got this product because I really like the cleanser & have since repurchased it in the full size.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Sea Salt Spray: I don’t think I’m the target market for this product.  I have thin straight hair & instead of giving me beachy waves, it just gave me heavy hair with what felt like a week’s worth of product buildup near the roots.  I’ve been trying this out on days I’m not planning to leave the house & after trying in combinations with a few different products I still haven’t gotten it to work for me.  Given my hair type, I wasn’t expecting it to.  It could be great for someone else though so I can’t say anything disparaging about it.  I wish I had gotten the hairspray to try, it sounds great for my hair type.

Secret Clinical Strength Stress Response  in Serene Citrus:  I have been using Secret Clinical strength for 3-4 years now & actually purchased this new product a couple of days before the surprise VoxBox.  I find that these clinical strength antiperspirants really work best when directions are followed to apply both morning and night.  This product truly does stop perspiration for an entire day & has a light fresh scent that quickly fades.  Occasionally I can smell it during the day, but I feel if that ever happens then I know that it really is working.

Skinnygirl Daily On The Go Bars: This was the disappointing product of the box.  I got the Greek Yogurt Blueberry Crisp Flavor & both the blueberry & yogurt bits tasted chalky and fake.  The “yogurt” wasn’t creamy & was basically just super sweet frosting.  I don’t appreciate the heavy-handed Skinnygirl brand gimmick & a box of 5 bars is 12.99. Ugh. No. For a similar amount of calories (180) I can get a box of bars with more fiber & protein that taste better for half the price.

I know this review is super late but after actually using all of these products for over a month, I can say that Influenster has introduced me to two new staple products.  If you haven’t heard of Influenster and want to learn more about their community and the free Vox Box program, visit Influenster to request an invitation.

2013: 50 Books January Update

6 Feb

So, with my winterim class & school restarting overlapping, I didn’t think I would have much time to read this month.  I forgot that I tend to read more when I’m busier, just because I feel less guilty reading than watching a movie or a tv programme in my free time.  If I want to read 50 books in a year, that averages out to 4.16 books a month.  Maybe I’ll get to more than 50! No promises.

Here’s what I read this month & my final impressions.

Lists

1. The Virgin Suicides: Jeffery Eugenides  I have a thing where I won’t see a movie unless I’ve read the book first, if it’s a book I want to read or is on a list.  Now I can watch the movie! I’ve also read Middlesex by him & enjoyed that.

2. Bossypants: Tina Fey I like Tina Fey, but I didn’t really like this book.  By the end it was just a, “Look at how quirky and awkward I am”.  I think I would have liked better in small doses- one essay at a time- rather than reading it in one sitting like I did.  Her schtick got tired quickly.  I did like reading about her life though, especially about her friendship with Amy Poehler.

3. Snuff: Chuck Palahniuk Weird. Weird. Weird. Made me want a Silkwood shower.

4. Perfume: The Story of A Murderer: Patrick Suskind  This book was so so so good! This is the kind of novel that I love.  The descriptions of the nuances of scent were so vivid.  I highly recommend!

5. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason: Helen Fielding  This is exactly the kind of chick lit book that I had complained about in my first post, but it was on a few “best books” lists (public choice ones) that I’d have to read it eventually.  It was a pretty mindless book that I read in a couple of boring lectures (Fundamentals of Microbiology…don’t judge!).

Total: 5/50.

I think I’ve kicked this challenge off to a good start.  Most of these books were pretty short easy reads though. I want to try and alternate longer more serious books in between shorter novels

New Year’s Resolutions

2 Jan

I hate the whole idea of a New Year’s Resolution.  It’s the equivalent of “I’ll start my diet tomorrow.”. Sure there are things that I need to do more, but the fact that the numerical year is different isn’t going to make it stick or make it any more important in your mind.  Who has actually accomplished a New Year’s Resolution for more than a few weeks. I’ll tell you: NOBODY.  If someone says they have, they lied.Yeah, I should probably get back in shape, remember to take vitamins every day, not sleep in makeup, become a smarter shopper, do better in uni…the list could go on for days. I will try to do these things, but I think they’l happen more organically, not spurred by changing calendar years. I’m not that type of person.

What I am is a list lover.  I love to write lists just so I can cross things off them.  One of my…quirks…is that I love love love to cross off the last item on a list. My favorite lists are the best books lists and the Academy Awards Nominees lists.  Every year since 2009, I print out the Academy Awards Nominations List and I watch every movie nominated in every category during the course of the next year. (Yes, I’ll write about this again when this year’s list comes out.)  Some are great, some are shite, but I feel like I get a good dose of culture that doesn’t exist in South Dakota.

On a related tangent, I’ve always loved to read.  I like to read mostly classics, with some great contemporary books mixed in.  I don’t like many modern popular books.  I went into B&N a few weeks ago & “Paranormal Romance” had whole entire shelves (yes, PLURAL) devoted to interspecies lovin’. I will never understand that. I also can’t stand modern “chick lit” like “50 Shades of WTF“, “Sex and the City“, anything by Danielle Steel…that sort of book.  Every single story like is like a “you choose 3” combo of these categories: going to a new job/school, new motherhood, first twuuuu wuuuv, romance after divorce/bad breakup, becoming famous (or the love interest is famous), living in the ‘big city’, and, dieting. Blerg. Isn’t that why we keep friends from high school on Facebook long after graduating & losing touch; to read and laugh about their stupid vapid manufactured drama. That in book form=no thanks. Sure, there are exceptions, but in my eyes they are few and far between.

Many “best books” lists are mainly classics, with some good contemporary books mixed in.  I’ve reached the halfway mark on some lists, but I’d love to finish one in the next couple years.  I don’t have a specific one I’m working on, I’d just like to make a dent in a few and read some of the books that I’ve bought but haven’t yet read.

With so much technology…basically netflix & youtube…I just sort of stopped reading in my free time.  After long days & nights of class & studying, I wouldn’t want to read in my limited spare time, no matter how much I really loved the book. I’d rather watch an episode of a good tv show or a quick video.  Then when I had more time, I’d think “Ooh, time to catch up on XYZ show, I can finish the season” or “XYZ movie just came out on DVD, I’ll redbox it.” I love a good TV show, but I want to read more.

This year’s goal: 50 books. I think I can do it.

I’ll keep a running list on here, updating after I finish a couple. I won’t do book reviews or anything, just a short statement if I liked it or not. Unless it’s really good or really terrible, that’s as in-depth as I’ll get. As I think most of them will be older books, I don’t think I can say something that hasn’t already been said.

P10P/B Update #2: My Confessions

2 Jan

Confession: I broke P10P and P10B.

Confession #2: It’s not as bad as it sounds.

I purchased a red lip liner from Rimmel. I didn’t have one & needed one to wear red lipstick to some holiday festivities. Cost: about $3. I’ve already used it about three times, so I think it was worth it. In my opinion it shows a little progress: I found a great drugstore product instead of heading to Sephora or a makeup counter for a pricier alternative.

I also went to B&BW to stock up on wallflower refills. I had just put in my very last one from my last B&BW semi-annual sale purchase so was completely out. (2 packs for $6 on all the scents is a great deal).  The wallflower refills are not a beauty item & therefore not counted However B&BW had the Warm Vanilla Sugar Body Butters 75% off so I bought 2. Cost: about $8. I love vanilla & the body butters are very thick and creamy. These will definitely get used.

So now my projects have become Project 11 Pan and Project 12 Bottle.  I’ll probably keep referring to them as P10P & P10B for continuity’s sake, but the new “requirements” will be reflected in the totals.

Confession#3: My mum gave me a SJCP gift card over the holidays, but I haven’t spent it. I really want to, but I want to make more progress on the makeup items in my P10P. I think I’ll hold onto it, until a time when I really feel like breaking the project.  Yes, items will be bought, but I won’t be spending any money. I just don’t know if gifted items and gift cards violate P10P/Bs.  Any opinions?

Confession #4: I haven’t been able to hide my Ipsy and Sample Society boxes away and not use those items.  I have been playing with them & using them.  Some I gave as part of gifts, some I kept, and some I traded.  My subscriptions boxes were one of the original exceptions for these projects, so I havent been adding any thing to my stash that I wouldn’t already have.  I did cancel popsugar after this December’s box (one word: dull) so…progress? I think so.

Not a Confession, but an update all the same: I finally found both my camera and the battery charger so I’ll be posting more now that I can take better quality photos.  I had been using my phone with quite mediocre results, but things should be a little better. I’m not good at photography or photo editing, but I can take sharper photos that are more true to color-I think that is the most important part.

Thanks for reading,

Bree

P10P & P10B Update #1

30 Dec

So it’s been 3 weeks since I started my P10P & P10B and I’ve already finished a few items.  These were products pretty much on their last legs to get the project off on a good start.

3 Week Update (Apogee Protein Treatment not pictured)

3 Week Update (Apogee Protein Treatment not pictured)

I finished  a pack of Garnier Refreshing Remover wipes: these are my all-time favorite MU remover wipes. They’re only in here because this is a really old pack that I opened, but then I tried some other wipes in between that I couldn’t stand (side-eye to you, Willa “gentle” cleansing wipes) but made myself use before finishing these.  Also finished the pack of Simple Cleansing Wipes and the L’Oreal Clean Artiste Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover.  I also finished up a deluxe sample size of the Sephora Instant Moisturizer.  The last skincare item I finished was the Ernzo Lazlo Phormula 3-9 Repair Balm.  This came in an SS box and the full size is $245 for 1.7 oz! This little vial lasted a month just using it on a dark spot, it was too rich to use on my whole face.

I also finished my Big Sexy Hair Spray N’ Play Harder Hair Spray. I’ve been trying to find a drugstore hairspray that works just as well, but I haven’t found it yet. The Apogee Protein Treatment, I did once a week, but I have other hair mask samples to use now.

I also finished the VS Very Sexy Noir EDP mini and VS Very Sexy Noir Body Mist which were much emptier than I thought.

Im giving up on the Burt’s Bees Radiance Lotion.  At first I wondered why I stopped using it.  While it was thin, it seemed to soak in nicely and the shimmer was subtle (poor lighting) and the scent was very light and fresh.  I was so so so wrong.   It seems to soak in nicely, but it just sits on top of the skin & after about 10 minutes starts to pill off the skin when rubbed, leaving a white cast of glitter. I usually used it during the day right before I got dressed.  One time I put it on before bed & in the morning my black sheets were covered in white glitter. It looked like I had made my bed in the middle of a rave! There are only a couple more days of use in the bottle but i’m not going to subject myself to this glitterbomb when I have other lotions waiting to be used that will actually moisturize my dry winter skin.

There will be a couple changes to P10P.  I gave away a couple of the items: the Tarte Multiplye Eye Primer and the Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush.  I couldn’t figure out the best order  & timing of applying the primer, curling, & applying mascara.  I just ended up with droopy sad lashes 90% of the time. I recently got another identical mini tarte cheek stain in my pre-P10P haul from tarte’s Friends & Family (which I have yet to post). I’ll just count the next makeup items I finish.

From my P10P list, I finished up the L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes.  It suddenly got really dry and clumpy so I’m calling it done.

P10P & P10B items listed individually (items later added to P10P/B in bold):

P10P

  1. Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer
  2. Sephora Anti-Shine Foundation Primer Mini
  3. Sephora Anti-Shine Foundation Primer Mini
  4. Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer Mini
  5.  Benefit Girl Meets Pearl Highlighter Mini
  6. Stila Lip Glaze in Apricot
  7. Clinique Almost Lipstick in Shy Honey Mini
  8. Stila One Step Primecolor in Kitten
  9. L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof Mascara
  10. Tarte Gifted Mascara
  11. Lancome E/S in Gaze
  12. Tarte 360 Creaseless Eye Primer Mini
  13. MUFE HD Finishing Powder Mini
  14. Estee Lauder Artist Crayon eyeliner in Black

Total: 1/10

P10B

  1. VS Very Sexy Noir Body Mist
  2. VS Very Sexy Noir EDP Mini
  3. Simple Toner
  4. Simple Cleansing Wipes
  5. Olay Total Effects cleanser
  6. Garnier Refreshing Remover Cleansing Wipes
  7. True Blue Spa Paraffin Softening Hand Lotion
  8. Burt’s Bees Radiance Lotion
  9. VS At First Sight Lotion
  10. L’Oreal Clean Artiste MU Remover
  11. Lancome Bifacil MU Remover Mini
  12. Ahava Mud Mask Travel Size
  13.  Apogee Protein Treatment
  14. L’Oreal Collagen Moisture Filler Night Cream
  15. Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Hairspray
  16. Sephora Instant Moisturizer Deluxe Sample
  17. Erno Lazlo Phormula 3-9 Repair Balm DS

Total: 6/10

I also used my Sephora Rewards to buy a Korres lip butter set instead of the NAKED2 palette.  I was able to get that & the fresh sugar birthday gift for $3 using a free shipping code. Not bad. Now that I have most of the easier nearly empty items out of the way, this is where it ‘s going to get hard. I’m so tempted to go and pick up something new to try. I can walk the aisles of the drugstore makeup all day long…It’s the online cosmetics shopping, makeup counters, and the siren call of the Sephora in JCP that are my weakness. So far so good, but I don’t know if I’ll make it past the after-holiday sales.  No matter how many items I have to add, I will finish a P10…15…20P. Scout’s Honor. I have another update coming up very soon.

Project 10 Pan & Project 10 Bottle!

8 Dec

So, I never thought I would do this, but to clear out some clutter I’ve decided to go on a Project 10 Pan & a Project 10 Bottle.

While I have been buying a lot of makeup in the last few months, the point of this project is not to curb my spending. I just want to be able to use everything that I have before the expiry date.  During this time I can experiment with what I have, see what’s worth the money and what’s not, see what colors work well & what doesn’t…the list goes on.

Rules for both:

  • At least 8 finished items must be from the original list, 2 can be subbed out for 2 bonus items (or 4 minis) that were not on the list but finished during the course of the project.
  • 2 minis/travel size/deluxe sample size count as one full size product. 5 mini fragrance samples or 10 foil sachets also count as one full sized product.
  • Should I break P10P, any items purchased will not be used until end of P10P. I will also have to finish 2 additional items (4 minis) per item purchased. Exception: I’ll be using my Sephora rewards card in the next couple of days to buy Naked2, but I won’t open it until the end of P10P.
  •  Also can purchase necessities should need arise & P10P go longer than expected (Basically, hygiene items not included in P10P use-ups or spending ban) Only items that do not have any backup options can be purchased.
  • I’m still receiving my subscription boxes: Ipsy, Sample Society, and Popsugar, but won’t use the MU items.

Everything that I’ve chosen is nearly new to approximately halfway used.  That sounds like an awful choice, but many of the items are minis.  If an items is very near to completion, I counted it as a mini & paired it with another mini or almost empty item.  This way, it’ll take a while, but not too long to finish. I’m thinking it’ll last somewhere between 3 and 4 months.

Even if no one else ever reads this, this post will hold me accountable. I’ll update frequently to help keep my motivation up

Wow. That was a long explanation. Now for the photos & items!

P10P: Started Dec 5, 2012

P10P Items

P10P Items

  1. Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer: This is about half used & will probably take me the longest. I’m trying to wear it at least 4 days a week.
  2. Sephora Anti-Shine Foundation Primer Minis (2): one new, one half used.
  3. Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer & Benefit Girl Meets Pearl Highlighter Minis: Both nearly new.
  4. Stila Lip Glaze in Apricot & Clinique Almost Lipstick in Shy Honey Minis: Both about half used
  5. Stila One Step Primecolor in Kitten: about half used.
  6. L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Waterproof &Tarte Gifted Mascaras:  Both have about a month of wear left.
  7. Tarte Flush Cheek Stain & Multiplye Eye Primer Minis: Both brand new
  8. Lancome E/S in Gaze: Small pan from a quad.  I hit the pan on it last week, so I think I can finish the rest in 3-4 months!
  9. Tarte 360 Creaseless Eye Primer & MUFE HD Finishing Powder Minis: Two of my new favorite things, but I have some similar products to try
  10. Estee Lauder Artist Crayon eyeliner in Black: only good for the waterline & tightline. It’s too dry to draw smoothly on the upper lashline so this will also take ages.

(Please ignore the elf primer in the photo, I took that out of the P10P)

P10B: Started Dec 5, 2012

P10B Items

P10B Items

  1. VS Very Sexy Noir Body Mist & EDP Minis: Mist is almost empty but EDP is nearly full
  2. Simple Toner & Cleansing Wipes: Toner is almost finished & about half of the wipes.
  3. Olay Total Effects cleanser & Garnier Refreshing Remover cleansing wipes: Only about 5 wipes left so combining with the last 1/3 of the cleanser.
  4. True Blue Spa Paraffin Softening Hand Lotion: 3/4 left
  5. Burts Bees Radiance Lotion: About half left.
  6. VS At First Sight Lotion: About half left
  7. L’Oreal Clean Artist & Lancome Bifacil MU Removers: L’Oreal is almost done so combining with the Lancome mini.
  8. Ahava Mud Mask & Apogee Protein Treatment: New, have backups.
  9. L’Oreal Collagen Moisture Filler Night Cream: About half left
  10. Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Hairspray: This one only has about five uses left, but I have many others.

If you read all of that, I’ll buy you a drink.

I’ll be updating whenever I finish 2 or more products. I anticipate this will take between 3 and 4 months, so I’m digging in my heels & settling in for the long haul (kidding, no hauls!).

Influenster College Vox Box

30 Nov

This is what came in the Influenster College Vox Box.  It was my first box from them & I was very surprised to receive it because they recently re-vamped their website & I hadn’t felt that I was very active on their new site. The products are supposed to be things that college students need & use to get through the day.

From L-R

Sheets Energy Strips in Mint Boost: These remind me of when the Listerine strips were popular.  They had a reaaallly strong minty flavor.  I’ve put a couple in each of my bags in case of breath emergencies (ha!) & it’s really great that each strip is individually wrapped.  I didn’t notice an increase in energy though.

2. Broadway Nails imPress Nails (lace pattern): I really liked the lace pattern that I received.  Other than that, these were a disappointment.  I have long nail beds and keep my hands well manicured.  These nails were too short to use under normal circumstances.  I did use them, but only due to the fact that I had a major nail break on one nail and filed all my nails down (shorter than I normally wear).  They also were too wide for my nail beds and I had to do a lot of filing to get the nails that were long enough to cover my nail beds to fit.  They did look fantastic and wear very well, especially since they just use a sticky adhesive and not a glue. I kept a couple of the extra nails to use as an accent nail.   They just feel like too much work for wearing on my whole hand.  If they ever change the shape of the nails they make, I’d definitely try them again.

3. Pentel Energel-X (in black): It’s a pen. A good pen, but just a pen.  Writes smoothly, doesn’t smear or bleed. It’s a keeper. If they’re not too expensive, I’d get the blue the next time I have a shop for writing utensils.

4. NYC Color Showtime Glitter Eyeliner (in Black):  I was surprised at how much I liked this.  My go-to pencil liners are the Lancome Crayon Khols which are much more expensive but are so smooth and creamy.  The NYC liner glided on very smoothly after I warmed it up a little on the back of my hand.  It didn’t budge throughout the whole day, even though I didn’t set it with shadow.  The glitter isn’t that noticeable when first applied but appears more and more throughout the day.  I only apply this on the top lashline because I don’t want the glitter to get in my eyes, so it does necessitate still needing another black liner for the waterline, tightline and lower lashline.  This is the only product I’ve ever tried from NYC, but I might give them a look the next time I’m at the drugstore.

5. Necco Tropical Wafers: This was my favorite item in the box. Seriously. I haven’t had Necco wafers in a couple of years & only a couple convenience stores in my town even carry the originals.  I loved the mango, coconut, and banana flavors.  Why there isn’t more banana flavored candy in the world is beyond me.

I’m not sure exactly how this is a College VoxBox but I’ll get lots of good use out of the eyeliner and pen.    It was so nice to get a mystery package of new things to try & I’m looking forward to hopefully getting selected for more Influenster boxes.
