P10B Update #3

27 Feb

Celebration is in order! According to the rules set forth in my first P10B post, I’ve finished P10B! I needed to finish 10 items (amended to 12 to make up for breaking the project) and eight had to be from the original P10B list.  I’m surprised how quickly P10B items have gone. Since I counted two minis/travel size/deluxe sample size items as one, it was much easier than I thought to use up some of the things I’ve been holding on to.  I don’t travel much (unfortunately) so there was no reason to be “saving them”.

Hair:  This month I went through quite a few hair products.  I finished the Paul Mitchell Firm Style hairspray, which was anything but, and the Extra Body Thickening Serum which just made my hair look and feel dry.  I also used up a Nioxin hair booster which I don’t think did anything, but it did feel kind of cool and tingly when applied.  One of my regular styling products (when I actually style my hair) is the Osis+ Dust it hair texturizing powder, it’s great for adding body to clean hair.  I will always repurchase this & I found a seller on Amazon that sells it in 3packs which was a great deal. My favorite new product was the Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Super Comb Prep & Protect which was a light leave-in conditioning spray.  It was very moisturizing without being heavy and it smelled lovely.  I dont think I will repurchase because it’s very expensive ($32 for 200ml), but I did love what the product did for my hair so  I purchased the Matrix Hydratherapie Daily Leave-in Tonic which is quite similar- a little less moisturizing so I just use a few more sprays- and a great value at $17 for 500ml. (To explain: I had used up about half of the Number4 and then liked it so saved the rest and bought the Biolage well before this project started. No breaking the project!).  I also finished a Tresseme shampoo & a Oscar Blandi shampoo sample both of which I liked.

Skin: I used up the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub which I hated (I didn’t choose it).  I have much better exfoliators, I didn’t like that it was mentholated, and I noticed no change in my pores. I hate it so much that now the smell turns my stomach…blech. I did really like the Olay cream cleanser but I like the Murad one I’m using now much better.  I also finished the L’Oreal Collagen Moisture Filler Moisturizer which I loved…and then hated…and then loved.  It’s quite thick so at times it can be a bit heavy for my combination skin, but it is a great night cream & I liked it used on the neck and decollete during the day. I also used up a DS of the Snowberry Lite Day Cream (I accidentally tossed the tube): I hated the texture, the smell, and the fact that it instantly made my skin super oily. The other moisturizer I finished was 2 DS of the Sephora Instant Moisturizer which I have now purchased. My favorite item that I tried was the Lancome BiFacil Double Action Makeup Remover which was phenomenal at removing waterproof makeup but is too expensive considering how fast I go through makeup remover.

Body: I finished the BBW body wash in Japanese Cherry Blossom and Philosophy 3 in 1 in Inner Grace, both of which smell lovely and I will probably buy from both places again.  I used up the Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion on my hands and the Gilchrist & Soames Aqua Lime Body butter which were both underwhelming moisturizers.  I finished up a Fresh Hesperides Grapefruit Soap (not pictured, obviously) which I loved the scent of, but I don’t really care for bar soaps much.  The last thing I finished was the Victoria’s Secret “At First Sight” lotion which was my last of this now-discontinued scent.  It’s described as a romantic mix of violet and bergamot. Ah, it smelled divine. I had stocked up at one of the semi-annual sales when the “At first sight” line was like $3 a piece.  I feel like VS is so quick to discontinue their product lines that I just find something that I love right before it’s discontinued.  I’m still holding a grudge for their discontinuing the VS Naturally line.

I think i’m going to keep up the project until my P10P is over.  I’ve replaced some essentials (makeup remover & toner) and also bought a deeply discounted perfume from The Body Shop but haven’t needed much else & still have more samples and things to go through.  I wonder just how many more things I can clear out.

2013: 50 Books January Update

6 Feb

So, with my winterim class & school restarting overlapping, I didn’t think I would have much time to read this month.  I forgot that I tend to read more when I’m busier, just because I feel less guilty reading than watching a movie or a tv programme in my free time.  If I want to read 50 books in a year, that averages out to 4.16 books a month.  Maybe I’ll get to more than 50! No promises.

Here’s what I read this month & my final impressions.

1. The Virgin Suicides: Jeffery Eugenides  I have a thing where I won’t see a movie unless I’ve read the book first, if it’s a book I want to read or is on a list.  Now I can watch the movie! I’ve also read Middlesex by him & enjoyed that.

2. Bossypants: Tina Fey I like Tina Fey, but I didn’t really like this book.  By the end it was just a, “Look at how quirky and awkward I am”.  I think I would have liked better in small doses- one essay at a time- rather than reading it in one sitting like I did.  Her schtick got tired quickly.  I did like reading about her life though, especially about her friendship with Amy Poehler.

3. Snuff: Chuck Palahniuk Weird. Weird. Weird. Made me want a Silkwood shower.

4. Perfume: The Story of A Murderer: Patrick Suskind  This book was so so so good! This is the kind of novel that I love.  The descriptions of the nuances of scent were so vivid.  I highly recommend!

5. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason: Helen Fielding  This is exactly the kind of chick lit book that I had complained about in my first post, but it was on a few “best books” lists (public choice ones) that I’d have to read it eventually.  It was a pretty mindless book that I read in a couple of boring lectures (Fundamentals of Microbiology…don’t judge!).

Total: 5/50.

I think I’ve kicked this challenge off to a good start.  Most of these books were pretty short easy reads though. I want to try and alternate longer more serious books in between shorter novels
